everything else is just information"”

Please
use the tabs above to see details and view videos of the bespoke programmes
that we can offer.
We
are in an age where children from 11 to 15 spend over 50% of their waking
time in front of one screen or another. Much of the learning that takes
place is within a 2 dimensional virtual world.
Recent research has shown that this is seriously
detrimental to healthy cognitive development.
At Embercombe we view the daily rhythms and needs
of the 50 acres of wildlife habitats, garden, woodland and farm as the
curriculum, an outdoor classroom of infinite resources.
Hands on activities in the outdoor
classroom support and compliment many national curriculum subjects,
in particular the Sciences and the Arts, incorporating creative writing
and craft skills.
Activities are seasonal and vary depending on the
weather and needs of the farm, the woods and the garden. Typical activities
include:
•
Preparing and planting the vegetable garden
• Harvesting fruit and vegetables
• Charcoal making and drawing
• Building woodland shelters
• Woodland Management
• Compost Making
• Making fires
• Cooking outdoors
• Map making
• Animal care
• Exploring habitats
|
•
Bush craft
• Apple pressing
• Green woodworking
• Basketry
• Pottery
• Building earth ovens
• Bread baking
• Felt making
• Storytelling / drama / role play
• Singing
|
We hope to inspire and encourage teachers, children
and parents to develop their own school grounds as an educational resource.

Jo
Clark – Co-ordinator of Land-based Learning
I was born in Devon and brought
up on a small farm in the Exe Valley and I’ve been involved
with farming and horticulture all my life and have been teaching
land based activities for the past 12 years.
I view the outdoor environment as an infinite educational resource
and I’m always exploring new ways to engage children in
hands on activities that assist and compliment their learning
journey.
Establishing the connection between the food we eat and how it
is produced where the children and young people are involved experientially
in every aspect for seed to table, has been a major thrust of
my work.
I am very happy to show you around and discuss potential programmes.
Please contact me via e-mail
or call the office on 01647 252983. |
